The Woman Lit by Fireflies is a rollicking collection of three novellas that spans the odd contours of the American landscape. It introduces Harrison's beloved character Brown Dog, an ex-Bible student with raucously asocial tendencies who rescues the preserved body of an Indian chief from the depths of Lake Superior in a caper that nets a wildly unexpected bounty.
Elsewhere, a band of 60s radicals reunite to free an old comrade from a Mexican jail. And a 50-year-old suburban housewife flees quietly from her abusive businessman husband and explores the bittersweet pageant of the preceding years within the sanctuary of an Iowa cornfield.

Best thing(s) he ever wrote. I don't know why this one goes in and out of publication. All the stories in this book are in the short fiction hall of fame in my opinion. The origins of the Brown Dog series speak for themselves, but going from hoarder / manager specialist, to CIA evacuation team from the jungle to alcoholic scuba diving salvage teams, he covers all this ground and then some with skill, style and care. Some of the best character development that can be read. For the record, I am not a gusher or fan of all things Jim H, but this is undeniably great reading.Product details

The Woman Lit by Fireflies (Audible Audio Edition) Jim Harrison Ray Porter Carrington MacDuffie Lorna Raver Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews
I've always considered Harrison an exceptional author but this book seems unfinished. I was actually quite surprised when I got to the last page and there was no more text.
Harrison's a great writer!
What a wonderful storyteller. The characters jump off the page and into your soul.
The title novella was a masterwork. The second novella was exceptional as well....the first I had read as part of another collection and while a favorite...was a repeat, so that’s why only 4 stars.
The author’s central characters always have issues with life, other people, etc. And they invariably do a lot of thinking about it. It all makes for an interesting read – for the most part. There is a certain amount of rambling and abrupt shifts in his stories. For me, the Brown Dog story was the best of the three.
Harrison's ability to truly switch voices shines in this set of three short stories. I went through this collection very fast, and I'm usually a slow reader. I found the first two stories the most interesting for me, as I had a hard time empathizing with the main character in the titular story. But Harrison is certainly a master of getting inside someone's head. He presents thoughts and discussions in a way that seem very real. You start to get a character and think, "yep, that's how they would think."
What an excellent story teller. I look forward to trying some more more of his works.
Jim Harrison shows why he was regarded as the master of the underappreciated art of the novella in this collection of three stories. Harrison explores diverse concepts such as friendship, love both unrequited and lost, and coming to grips with your life when it becomes obvious that it hasn't met the expectations you had for it many years ago. Harrison creates fascinating characters, including introducing 'Brown Dog' which became his only reoccurring character and mixes humor, anger and loss in a way that few writers can to create multi dimensional stories that both entertain and challenge.
