Bystanders eBook Phillip Murrell
Hero. Villain. Misunderstanding. This book starts out with a clear intention of setting the theme, and the reader is rewarded with knowing what to look forward to starting chapter one. The author then takes it one step further and surprises you with a set of twists as the plot escalates, leading to both a satisfying finish, but also a cliffhanger to make sure we pick up the second book -- which reminds me of DC and Marvel movies. There is boyish humor throughout the pages, during scenes between dynamics of officers and other civilians which are meant to appeal to adults...which means that teenagers would probably love it too.Tags : Bystanders - Kindle edition by Phillip Murrell. Bystanders eBook Phillip Murrell Reviews
Awesome alternate view of a superhero.
Bystanders is a story with an ensemble cast, one of whom happens to be a superhero. I’m a big fan of larger-than-life stories told through the eyes of regular-life-sized people. This book read something like Cloverfield; most of the characters can only watch in terror as a couple of major players battle it out. This has positives and negatives.
On the plus side, the varying reactions to Votary’s deeds (and the conversations that resulted from each character’s personal philosophy) keeps the story moving. It was interesting to see the connections between the various side characters arise as the story moved towards the climax.
Unfortunately, the rapid-fire introduction of several characters at the beginning makes for a rough start. I understand that Votary is not the central character; this book is about the “Bystanders.” But there are so many that it gets difficult to care about them all.
There was a great twist in there, though. Early on, a character gets introduced who looks like a classic Captain American protagonist. He’s handsome, muscular, and immune to the sexual wiles of the slick reporter. But next scene... well, you should see for yourself.
Overall, I recommend this book for those who like comic book action and emotionally charged characterization. If you can get past some style issues and keep track of who everyone is, you’ll enjoy this one and find yourself wanting to see what happens next.
A city is in the grip of a violent crime wave when a vigilante appears, but is the vigilante all that they appear, how will the criminals respond and will the city become safer?
This book had action galore and many good / believable characters – there was plenty of violence but nothing too extreme. The interactions of the media / villains / police / vigilante were all credible and logical, given the well developed city setting they existed in.
My 4 star rating (instead of 5) was because some of the writing wasn’t tight enough – but this is very much a personal preference.
If you like films like ‘The Dark Knight’, you’ll probably enjoy this book.
Excellent book. Lots of action but with a strong plot. I am looking forward to the second book in the series.
Best story I ever read !!! Can’t wait to crack open the sequel
Fun read with a fast paced plot that leaves you excited for the rest of the series. Bystanders is an alternate look at the collateral impact of heroes that comic books never bother to cover.
GREAT BOOK!! Kept me reading and excited to see what happens next. Portrays a realistic picture of what would happen if a superhero fought in an urban area. The book has a raw and gritty storyline. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!!!
