Disgraced detective Sam Crane would do anything to help his comatose daughter recover. But when he's told to turn a blind eye to the murder of a reclusive scientist, he refuses, seeing his resolve as atonement for failing his family and his colleagues.
Sam's determination to persevere endangers his friends, even as it reveals a secret sought by a deluded advertising magnate, a set of look-alike terrorists, and government agents a way to alter the visible world. If only he could have seen the truth through his own eyes.
Confronting a deceptive, hyper-commercial world amid a pandemic of blindness, Sam realizes he must embrace the artifice he resents to maintain his integrity. He plays his adversaries against each other in a gamble that puts his investigation at risk but offers a way to mend his fractured life–if he can survive.

Well written, I read it in pretty much one sitting. A lot of clever and interesting extrapolation set in a future day San Francisco. Would love to see more from this author , would be interested to see what would happen if he would delve more deeply into his characters ie write a seriesProduct details

Oversight eBook Thomas Claburn Reviews
Let's start with today's world. You know that once you click on an ad link or google search an item, you will have that subject showing up in ads on all your web pages. It is as if the net is watching you and tailoring its options to you. SURPRISE! You also know that if you want to enjoy web life free of ads that you have "the option" of purchasing that luxury. It is even possible now for ads to be streamed via the windows of trains and buses as the medium. Ramp that intrusiveness up and you have the setting for this not-too-far in the future thriller. The traditional detective story is enhanced with a variety of plots that mix together as a whole - intrusiveness of technology; a who-done-it murder; the love for a child and desire to see them healed; did he sell out at the end or is it a choice to help society (your decision) make for a very interesting read. You will find this captivating enough that when you pick the book back up again the next day, it will be as if you have never laid it down.

This a decent book, the mystery is interesting and intriguing. It was a bit difficult to grasp what was going on at times because of the futuristic setting that it required a lot of focus and attention to the surroundings. However, the book is a very easy read and so fluid. The mystery is was kept me going and the outcome of the big conspiracy is what was most intriguing.
Sam is faced with local authorities to big companies that try to deceive Sam from the truth.
RECOMMENDED.
Claburn has created an interesting world where everything done has monetary value. This is a truth in economics, we just don't like to think of it in those terms. His creation shows how a soulless monetization leads to no real change from our society, but it may be a bit more transparent.
This is an interesting murder mystery that has several layers and complexities. The last scene provides a nice closure while offering the possibility for more in a series.

Sam Crane is a data speculator. His job is to dig into cyberspace for information about people when other methods of investigation fail. When Sam is asked to take on the case of Dr. Xian Mako, a murdered researcher, who has been killed with the poison of the fugu fish, he runs smack up against the Big Brother state apparatus. In an age when, because of technology, your every move is tracked, Sam’s surprised to discover that the victim has hardly any cyberspace footprint. The only clue he has to work with at the start is a pair of special antique eyeglasses, which end up missing from another corpse, a close friend of his.
Oversight by Thomas Claburn is mystery, science fiction, and dystopian novel all rolled into one. In places the narrative, even when it’s describing action scenes, is a bit too jumpy, but the author can be forgiven since he’s written a quite entertaining book. The characters are mostly sympathetic – except for some of the villains who have only a bare minimum of redeeming graces, as befits true villains.
A tale of a future time – but, how far into the future?

This combination of hardboiled and science fiction works as an all-too-plausible look at a near-future society, where advertising, product placement, and brand awareness infiltrate every aspect of life. The core of the story is an engaging detective tale, but really its the future-world that is so well done here. When the protagonist has to please his health insurance company by going to the gym, while simultaneously working to pay off his energy usage debt via treadmill, the glimpse at a dystopian future possibility is scarily real (and this is only a momentary event in the story -- this type of new modern reality flows throughout this book).
If you see a Kickstarter for a bluetooth-enabled rice cooker and wonder 'what on earth is that for?' maybe it's for just the kind of over-connected global network of things and people depicted in this book (and I am *not* a conspiracy theorist).
In the end, the combo of thought-provoking near-future technology, a main character reminiscent of so many hard-boiled detectives from the past, and a murder mystery with tendrils in both worlds make this a well-written, fun and stimulating read. Echoes of Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, a bit of Ernest Cline's more recent Ready Player One, with layers of hardboiled fiction gluing the mix together.
Though this novel has been available for over a year, I hope that protagonist Sam Crane reemerges in a sequel some day soon!
A nice book about the future with added suspense. A landscape dominated by advertising and no privacy.
Makes you wonder if we are that far off.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
One of my favorite things in sci fi is when an author takes some aspect of current society and then extrapolates that into the future, or imagines some piece of tech and creatively expands on how it could be used or mis-used. This book is filled with those insights. Thomas Claburn's view of the future is cynical and advertising driven, and that makes for a pretty enjoyable and often humorous read. Plus, I got a good detective story set in San Francisco, which was fun.
