I picked up this book for my 12-year old. Since she is quite articulate, I will let her tell you herself what she thought:*****
I loved this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know how Aluna will be able to help the Equians now that she did what she had done. Hoku is your normal smart one, but he isn't a smart-aleck, he's nice. His smartness is helpful. Dash is an Equian gone wrong. He is an Equian with no horse body, so he looks like a human. This science fiction fantasy is awesome in every way and i recommend it to all ocean lovers and sci. fiction fans. GIVE ME MORE ABOVE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XDXDXD

Above World Jenn Reese Books Reviews
I don't have a passion for books but this one kept me up all night. I hadn't even realized 4 hours had passed while I was engrossed in the story. Wrapped up in the characters and their quest distracted me from even needing to go to the bathroom. Loved it!! Thank you Book It! For the free copy
If you've got a middle grader who likes adventure and exotic settings, this is a great book for them! If you're an adult who likes a fun read and terrific worldbuilding, then you should check it out too.
Above World gives us a future world where humans have remade themselves so they can live in some of the more inhospitable environments. Aluna and Hoku who live underwater travel to the Above World when their people and their home are threatened. They meet new people, make friends and allies and prove that determination, passion, and stubbornness can make a difference in the world.
Take a look! You won't regret it.
It was absolutely amazing definitely recommend this book for anyone in to sic-fi fiction love this series and will continue reading over again and again
Whether you're 10 or 50+, you will find this amazing book will take your breath away. It's sheer inventiveness is a delight, and Aluna and Hoku are characters to root for. I've devoured my copy today, and am sending one to my niece as soon as I can. Its for every girl who ever thought she couldn't make a difference. Because, hell, yes she can!
This story isn't exactly what I not my students would pick to read, but I found it very interesting and will read/listen to it again!! Itkept me at the edge of my seat! The narrator of the audio format was great to!!
It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a middle grade adventure this much. I've been trying to put my finger on why it sings to my inner 13-year-old so much, and I've decided that part of is the bright sense of wonder permeating its pages. Everything from the undersea world, to the centaurs, to the gorgeously described setting is so big and bright and exciting. It's very much a Jules Verne-esque novel for the modern child, with scientific explanations for fantastic creatures. I also loved the characters. Aluna is so fierce and Hoku is so geeky, and I loved watching them work together. This is a book that, for all its fantastical elements, never forgets that friendship is the greatest wonder of all.
Set in the far future when humans have taken evolution into their own hands, there isn't a single unmodified homo sapien in this book. Instead people have diverged into sea dwelling Kampii (we'd call them mermaids), deep sea deepfell, airborn aviars, desert centaurs, and subterranean snakemen - all of the vivid imagery of fantasy rendered as science fiction. The story kicks off when Aluna, a Kampii about to receive her tail (they do this by swallowing a gene modifier) questions her village elders about their policy of absolute isolation from the rest of the world. Their very existence depends on technologies, such as the gene modifiers and necklaces that allow them to breath underwater, that they no longer know how to make or repair, so when it fails, so will their civilization.
Aluna and her best friend head for the Above World, and I won't spoil the adventures they have there in search of HydroTek, the company whose logo is on their breathing necklaces. I'll just say that there are a lot of cool settings, and some awesome fight scenes, both of which pay homage to Reese's other talents. Besides being a writer she is also a graphic designer and a martial artist. There is also a wonderful cast of supporting characters who can fly, swim, sing, shoot venom, and control computers through a furry animal interface. Admit it, that list has at least piqued your curiosity. I'm glad this is the first of a series, as I look forward to seeing what happens next.
The past tense of "to tread" is "trod". This cranky note brought to you by aquatic humans who spend a lot of time staying still in currents. That said...
I enjoyed this book. It didn't blow me out of the proverbial water, but it was reasonably well-crafted and engaging, and I didn't check to see how much more book I had to get through.
You'll be shocked to lean that the rebellious princess is forced by her conscience to leave all she knows on the very eve of her adulthood, and venture out into the cruel wide world, armed only with a faithful technologically-able sidekick and the fighting lessons provided by her brothers.
I enjoyed the adventures and the different kinds of genetically modified humans Aluna encounters on her way. I can see this being an interesting trilogy if that's your scene.
Aluna is class-oblivious, as noted by her bestie, but I think it's easy enough to be oblivious if you are in the one percent.
Read if You like a nice straightforward adventure story.
Skip if You have too long a reading queue to read something unsurprising.
